Water softening is the process of removing calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations (positively charged ions) in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing. Water softening is achieved, normally, by using ion-exchange resins. The ‘hardness creating’ ion, such as Calcium, Magnesium and Manganese are exchanged by Sodium ions present on the resin.
The resin can be re-generated, once it is saturated or exhausted.
